Designer's Note

“Located in Jingdezhen, the historic porcelain capital of China, the project draws inspiration from the transformative journey of clay into porcelain. Rather than celebrating perfection, the design embraces the fleeting beauty revealed at the moment of fracture—where imperfection becomes an expression of craftsmanship, memory, and time.

The original red-brick façade and timber entrance doors are carefully preserved, maintaining a dialogue with the site’s historical identity. At the heart of the interior, a sculptural white installation composed of fragmented porcelain-like forms rises through the double-height space, functioning simultaneously as a vertical circulation element and the spatial focal point of the project.

The ground floor continues the material language of the exterior by reinterpreting the existing terracotta bricks. Through subtle manipulation of their form and assembly, the bricks evolve into integrated architectural elements, including seating, shelving, and display features, blurring the boundary between structure and furniture.

Inspired by the craft of porcelain making, the project seeks to reinterpret Jingdezhen’s cultural heritage through a contemporary architectural language—one that celebrates process, materiality, and the quiet beauty found in imperfection.”
